Africa is the archetypal continent of biodiversity, home to millions of animal and plant species that, alongside humans, form a precious natural resource. Today, much of this diversity is under threat of extinction. Migration routes are vanishing. Pollution and overexploitation are disrupting natural processes. Poverty is on the rise.
The aim of the Peace Parks Foundation is to restore the harmonious cohabitation between nature conservation and economic and social development. The Peace Parks are cross-border conservation sites, in other words zones that overlap the African national frontiers left over from the colonial era, and are designed to protect the interests of people, animals and plants. The reserves have been chosen for the richness of their biodiversity, their cultural heritage and their potential for growth. Thanks to the support of regional governments, international organisations and the private sector, no fewer than ten Peace Parks have been created in southern Africa.
